1 Peter: God’s Pilgrim People in a Hostile World – Christ Our Example

Peter Barnes | 1 Peter 2:21-23

1 Peter 2:21-23

– Christ is our example (2:21-23) and our substitute (2:24-25).

1. Christ is our example.

– 2:21. That word was used to describe a method by which youngsters were taught the Greek alphabet. Jesus is like a stencil.

– 1 Cor.11:1; Rom.8:29; 1 John 3:1-2.

2. Christ is sinless.

– 2:22. See 1 John 2:6; Acts 10:37-38; 2 Cor.5:21.

– James 3:8. Jesus is the only sinless man who has ever lived.

– Charles Wesley:

No sinner in Himself was He,
But pure and perfect innocence.

3. Christ did not retaliate when provoked.

– 2:23a,b. Calvin: ‘It is to wound a man with an accursed sting.’ See Mark 14:65; 15:16-20, 29-32.

Pastor Julius von Jan in 1938: ‘The S.A. men spat upon me with no understanding how I rejoiced to be brought so near to the Lord in such shame and in such discipleship.’ Prov.24:29.

He could have retaliated (Matt.26:51-53); but did not (Luke 23:34).

4. Christ committed Himself to the righteous Judge.

– 22:23c; Mark 14:62.
