Peter Barnes | Jude 20-21

SERMON NOTES
BUILDING  OURSELVES  UP
(Jude  20-21)

– In  sanctification,  God  does  all  and  we  do  all  e.g.  we  keep  ourselves  (v.21)  and  Christ  keeps  us  (vv.1, 24);  see  Phil.2:12-13.

1. Build  yourselves  up  in  the  faith.

– v.20a;  faith  is  a  body  of  belief  (e.g. 1 Tim.1:5-6;  3:9;  4:2),  so  read  and  study  Scripture  (Psalm 1:1-3)

– also  learn  to  trust  God  in  day-to-day  life

2. Pray  in  the  Holy  Spirit.

– v.20b;  no  mention  of  praying  in  tongues

– Eph.2:18;  Rom.8:26-27;  it  is  prayer  helped  by  the  Spirit  with  the  awareness  of  being  heard  in  heaven  (Rev.5:8)

3. Keep  yourselves  in  the  love  of  God.

– v.21a;  Thomas  Manton  says  that  of  all  graces,  love  is  most  decaying

– Matt.24:12;  Rev.2:4;  John 15:9-10

4. Wait  for  the  mercy  of  our  Lord  Jesus  Christ.

– v.21b;  2 Pet.3:3-4;  Rom.13:12;  1 John 3:2-3;

– 2 Thess.1:6-9
